The Access to Nutrition Foundation (ATNF) develops and publishes the Global Access to Nutrition Index (the Global Index) and other Indexes that focus on single countries (Spotlight Indexes).
The purpose of the Access to Nutrition Indexes is to publish consistent standardized analysis and commentary on food and beverage manufacturers’ efforts to improve consumers’ access to nutritious foods and beverages, both globally and in Spotlight countries.
In the US, the proportion of obese and overweight people in the population are the among the highest in the world. Further, 85% of Americans do not consume the US Food and Drug Administration’s recommended daily intakes of the most important vitamins and minerals necessary for proper physical and mental development.
American consumers are slowly becoming aware of the importance of healthy diets. Consumers are already moving towards smaller brands and away from brands obviously produced by “big food” companies. In 2016, six of the top seven players in the US packaged food market saw declines in their market shares.
The US Spotlight Index is designed to provide a valuable tool to stakeholders to track major F&B manufacturers’ responses to these important nutrition and food industry trends.
The 2018 US Access to Nutrition Index will assess the nutrition policies, practices and disclosure of the ten largest F&B manufacturers in the US. As well as covering the usual nutrition topics covered in the Global Index, the US Spotlight Index will particularly focus on US-specific nutrition topics including making healthy food accessible and affordable in rural and urban food deserts, marketing in schools and companies’ contributions to public health programs. A key element of the US Spotlight Index will be a groundbreaking analysis of the nutritional quality of the US Index companies’ product portfolios.
Prior to starting research on the US Spotlight Index, ATNF consulted extensively with many US stakeholders on how to adapt the Global Index methodology to the US context. Companies, civil society organizations, academia and policymakers were involved through roundtables and one-to-one consultations. Moreover, ATNF convened its Expert Group, many members of which are American, to provide advice on all aspects of the US methodology. ATNF expects to publish the 2018 US Spotlight Index in June 2018.
The Access to Nutrition Index rates food and beverage manufacturers´ nutrition-related policies, practices and disclosures worldwide on a recurring basis.
