ATNF develops and publishes ‘Spotlight Indexes’ that score and rate the largest Food & Beverage manufacturers in each Spotlight Country.
During 2013, ATNF piloted its approach in three so-called Spotlight Countries: India, South Africa and Mexico. The ten largest companies by revenue in each market were analysed using the Global Index Methodology, adapted where necessary to reflect the regulatory context in each country. Because these exercises were undertaken on a pilot basis, the results have not been published.
In addition, ATNF undertook a ‘Product Profile’ exercise in each country. Working with a team at the Nuffield Department of Population Health at Oxford University led by Dr Mike Rayner, ATNF evaluated the nutritional quality around 50% of all foods and drinks available for sale from the ten companies in each market.
After the pilot in 2013 ATNF published the first full Spotlight Index in 2016 in India. In 2018 ATNF published the first US Spotlight Index.
The Access to Nutrition Index rates food and beverage manufacturers´ nutrition-related policies, practices and disclosures worldwide on a recurring basis.
